Innovation in the Southeast

Innovation in the Southeast

Southeast Saskatchewan has always been a place of energy, resilience, and practical problem-solving.

Our region is known for coal, oil and gas, power generation, agriculture, trades, small business, and a workforce that understands how to get things done.

Innovation is not something new arriving from somewhere else. It has always been part of our story.

Built on Energy. Powered by Innovation.

The farmer who adopts better equipment.

The tradesperson who learns a new technique.

The business owner who adapts to serve customers.

The worker who improves a process.

The entrepreneur who takes a chance on an idea.

Why Southeast Saskatchewan

The Same Spirit That Built Our Communities

Southeast Saskatchewan offers a unique combination of industry knowledge, energy expertise, land, water, workforce, community support, and real-world conditions.

The region has a strong history in energy and applied problem-solving, and there are opportunities to connect that experience with education, research, product development, entrepreneurship, and industry partnerships.

This is not about replacing what built us. It is about building on our strengths.

Energy and Industry Innovation

Applied Research, Close to Home

ICED = Innovation Centre for Energy Development

Through work connected to the Innovation Centre for Energy Development, known as ICED, Southeast Tech Hub is involved in conversations around applied research, product development, commercialization, manufacturing, and energy-related opportunities in the region.

These are the early-stage opportunities described on sethub.ca. Hydrogen Hub, the Organic Chemistry Lab, and the Microgrid are the site's three official "cornerstone" projects. The others are related interests mentioned within those pages, not yet separate named initiatives.
Early Planning

Hydrogen Hub

Explores turning local lignite coal into low-carbon hydrogen, paired with transportation and storage infrastructure and tied to the region's existing carbon capture work.

Early Planning

Organic Chemistry Lab

A proposed lab at Southeast College's Estevan campus so local applied-research projects no longer have to rely on the nearest lab, currently in Saskatoon.

Early Planning

Microgrid

Planned with Siemens Canada for Southeast College's Centre for Sustainable Innovation, to support workforce training and applied energy research.

Early Planning

Solar Powered Datacentre

Connected directly to the Microgrid project above — the datacentre concept and the microgrid are described as the same initiative.

Early Planning

Coal to Graphite

A City of Estevan area of interest in graphitizing coal, referenced as one of the projects that would use the future chemistry lab.

Early Planning

Lithium Extraction

Regional research interest in direct lithium extraction technology, another project that would rely on future lab access.

Ongoing

Applied Research and Product Development

The broader, ongoing conversations connecting industry, education, and entrepreneurs around research and commercialization opportunities.

New Tools. Same Work Ethic.

The Future of This Region Should Be Shaped by the People Who Live and Work Here

Southeast Tech Hub helps connect local people, businesses, industries, and partners with tools, training, research conversations, and opportunities that support long-term strength.
